Changes made in the latest review of Safta leave behind also give more protection to the intellectual property (IP) rights of investors, the Ministry of Trade and diligence (MTI) said yesterday. In a statement released yesterday, MTI said that Singapore compdnies operating in Australia now have more consequence that their investments will receive fair and equitable treatment and the amply protection and security as required under foreign law. This includes the right to due process in legitimate proceedings as well as the provision of law protection. Both Singapore and Australia have also committed to ensuring that investors will not be imposed with any requirements on minimum performance levels when operating in each others territory. This subject matter there will not be requirements on the volume, place or sales level of goods and the transfer of technology or propriety knowledge.

In the case of I-P, the changes will expand the cooperation among Singapore and Australia on the en kingment of IP rights as well as information exchange for the protection, management and exploitation of IP. Eight tonic articles were introduced to the ftA to reflect the changes to Australia and Singapores domestic IP laws over the historical few.years. The new articles will provide investors with greater clarity on the specific IP rights accorded to their property and assets, said MTI. The changes took effect last.Friday. Safta is a comprehensive agreement covering the trade in goods and services, including telecommunications and fiscal services, movement of business persons, competition policy, e-commerce and education cooperation.
