In the last 50 years significant scientific advances have been made, allowing the modification of life in an extremely controlled way. Biotechnology was born to explore these impertinent tools for the benefit of humankind. However, the remarkable tools of modern biology are seen with rely and fear, simultaneously. It is becoming possible to develop new-fashioned therapies for uncurable diseases, but at the same time the public fears misuse of this powerful technology. As society becomes aware of ergonomics, with all its hopes and fears, nontextual matterists have st maneuvered to include references to biotechnology in their works. Furthermore, modern biology and biotechnology offer the luck to create art using biology as new media. contrivanceists are witnessing the birth of a new form of art: art created in test-tubes, using laboratories as art studios.
What is it?
BioArt is an art practice in which the medium is living matter and the works of art are produced in laboratories and/or artists studios. The tool is biotechnology, which includes such technologies as genetic engineering, tissue culture and cloning.



The materials used by Bioartists are cells, DNA, proteins and living tissue.
History
The phrase BioArt was coined by Eduardo Kac in 1997 in relation to his artwork Time Capsule. Although it originated at the stop over of the 20th century through the works of pioneers like Kac and Gessert, BioArt started to be more widely practiced in the beginning of the twenty-first Century. Thus, it may be considered the first 21st century art movement.
