John Updike: A&P

Most people dont mature or have self-realization until something major happens in life, and even thusly they may shape immature during the situation. A&P by John Updike is a short novel told in a first individual point of view through the main character Sammys thoughts. By him saying things such as, She just walked straight on slowly, on these long white prima-donna legs (updike 260), suggests that he is not fully mature, but yet still a childish teenage boy at heart, focusing more on is attraction to girls then on his job. They are judged, without knowing, on every inch of their air if they are attractive or not.

Sammy is so distracted by the girls, as a childish boy would be, that he go up an elderly ladies crackers twice. She notices and presently says something to him. Immaturity immediately kicks in as he refers to her as a magnetize about fifty. The reader is able to tell that Sammy is unhappy at his job and does not care for the customers. He makes references to them as The sheep energy their carts down the aisle (Updike 261) and A few house slaves in pin curlers (Updike 261).
