Richard's Deformity As a Metaphor

In Richard III, Shakespe ar gives an account of Richards character that was popular opinion of him as an evil deformed schemer, until late in the 20th century. Historians instantaneously view this account as a dramatic bandage device, necessary for the villain role that Shakespeare had given him. It is non undifferentiated with what is now known of Richard III, who in many ways showed himself to be an enlightened and forward-thinking King.

Later, he describes himself as Deformed, unfinished, direct before his time into this brea thing world, scarce half make up. The deformity, which has been shown to have been exaggerated or even deliberately faked in portraits of Richard III, is given as the source of his evil ways. He says that as he cannot prove a lover he is dogged to be a villain.

While everybody makes fun of Richard, and thinks that he is not able to achieve anything, he shows everyone that even though he is handicapped, he can achieve the highest power, to be King. Richard overcompensates his inferiority. Richard is directly influenced by a society that does not respect him, and so he does not respect himself or society.





Richard is a slave to his unholy nature, and acts on his animal instinct throughout the play. These animal characteristics are emphasized by the various metaphors in the play. The other characters equate Richard to wolves, to spiders, toads, or any creeping venomd thing that lives. Shakespeare portrays Richard as a monster and a beast. Richards monster is symbolized in his appearance, which is so lamely and unfashionable that dogs bark at him, rather than accepting him as a fellow beast. Shakespeare portrays Richard as the devil, which mirrors the political view of Richard during Shakespeares life.
